Well, if you are looking for the American Congressman Jim McDermott on the Internet, one hit from a search engine might be our very own Phishery - this real-time, automated device has captured a phishing email supposedly from Halifax Bank.
|
The interesting thing about this phishing email is that one of the links in the message is for http://www.mcdermottforcongress.com/images/signature.gif.
Wondering what this link is?
Take a look at the image on the right and you will see it uses an image of Jim McDermott’s signature; even though his title may changed - now acting as an Online Security Advisor.
The use of a Congressman’s name (one who’s suitably trustworthy we assume) and signature in the mail, adds an air of authenticity to the email in a subtle social engineering trick.
The footer on Jim McDermott’s website reads ‘© 2006, Friends For Jim McDermott. All rights reserved‘.
Could this breach of copyright also be classed as identification theft?
