From the dept. of what not to do - security in airplane design.
As seen in an extract of the article “‘Fly-by-wireless’ plane takes to the air“:
A plane with no wires or mechanical connections between its engine, navigation system and onboard computers – only a wireless network – has been built and flown by engineers in Portugal.
The obvious major issue with RF is frequency jamming. In this respect, jamming the signal is an easy way to cause a Denial of Service in the transmission so communication will be halted. The project is relying on the Bluetooth protocol which can be affected by these jamming devices, for example.
The engineers have at least thought about these security issues:
But Santos and colleagues are working on this [Jamming]. She says Bluetooth is already fairly resistant to disruption as it is designed to guarantee a certain minimum data stream will always get through. “It has mechanisms for dealing with interference,” she says.
Myself, I’m don’t think I’m quite ready yet to take a flight in a plane which is fairly resistant to attack…
